Waldorf salad

Crisp apple, celery, grapes and toasted walnuts in a light lemony mayonnaise, first served at the Waldorf hotel in New York in the 1890s. Sweet, crunchy and a good way into salad for kids.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Toast the walnuts in a dry pan for 3–4 minutes, then chop roughly.
  2. Toss the apple in the lemon juice so it doesn't brown, then mix with the celery, grapes and mayonnaise. Season with pepper.
  3. Spoon onto the lettuce leaves and scatter with the walnuts.
