Mini Jamaican beef patties
Golden, turmeric-yellow pastry around a gently spiced beef filling, the Jamaican bakery snack in bite-size form. Make a big batch: they freeze well and vanish at parties.
Ingredients
- 300 g Plain flour
- 3 g Ground turmeric
- 2 g Curry powder
- 2 g Salt
- 150 g Butter, cold, cubed
- 15 ml Vegetable oil
- 1 Onions, finely chopped
- 3 Spring onions, finely sliced
- 0.2 Garlic, crushed
- 0.5 Fresh chillies, scotch bonnet or milder, finely chopped
- 400 g Beef mince
- 6 g Curry powder
- 1 g Dried thyme
- 1 g Ground allspice
- 1 Beef stock cubes, crumbled into 150ml hot water
- 40 g Breadcrumbs
- 1 Eggs, beaten, to glaze
Method
- Mix the flour, turmeric, curry powder and salt, then rub in the butter until it looks like breadcrumbs. Stir in about 100ml cold water to make a firm dough. Wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
- Fry the onion, spring onions, garlic and chilli in the oil for 5 minutes. Add the mince and brown it, breaking it up. Stir in the curry powder, thyme and allspice, then the stock. Simmer for 10 minutes, then stir in the breadcrumbs to thicken. Leave to cool.
- Heat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan). Roll the pastry out thinly and cut 10cm circles. Put a heaped teaspoon of filling on one half, brush the edge with egg, fold over and press with a fork to seal.
- Lay on lined trays, brush with egg and bake for 20 minutes until golden. Cool a little before serving: the filling is hot.
